The impromptu project immediately became a formative one. Packing his portrait subjects (locals recruited by Benjamin) stylist Sophie Gaten and photography gear into a tiny Kia, the intrepid team explored the region, criss-crossing from Yafo to the Dead Sea in order to document the country’s shifting youth culture.
Sam Nixon’s Young Hearts is the artist’s chronicle of this journey.
Instead of calculating for the heavy religious and political overtones present since the beginning of time, the energy of Nixon’s work is driven by the individual subjects. These photographs frame these young citizens at an emotional crossroads, where the backdrop of conflict is a lifelong reality. Nixon’s empathetic photography presents these young people as storytellers building their own roads through life amidst turbulence far outside of their control.
